Honoring the Legacy of David W. Mason at Reklaw Fly-In: Investing in the Future

For 39 years, retired Delta Pilot David W. Mason stood at the helm of the Reklaw Fly-In, sharing his passion for aviation and enriching the lives of all who attended with his colorful stories and camaraderie. Tragically, David “flew west” on January 26, 2024, and his ashes are now forever part of the grass strip he loved so dearly. Though David is no longer with us, the weekend Reklaw Fly-In and Campout continues—because that’s what he wanted.

Marcia has stepped up to carry on David’s legacy with a clear vision for the future. Along with her dedicated team of volunteers, she’s not just preparing for another successful event this year—they’re working to secure the long-term future of the Fly-In. From clearing brush and painting to mowing, repairing equipment, coordinating facilities, managing vendors, and overall raising the bar in all aspects, Marcia and her team are carefully reviewing details. “We aim to ensure that the wholesome, welcoming feel of the Fly-In is not only retained but preserved for years to come.” But it’s no longer about getting through one year at a time. It’s time for the community to step up and support this vision, ensuring that Reklaw remains a lasting tradition.

How KPN Has Stepped Up: Operation Reklaw Continues

As a charity with a mission to provide purpose and support for Disabled and PTSD-suffering veterans, as well as the sentinels of our society—Combat Veterans, Active Duty Law Enforcement, and Firefighters—KPN is uniquely positioned to step in and offer the right kind of support to Reklaw. We bring just enough assistance to make the event safer and more organized without changing its essence. We asked Marcia what was keeping her up at night, and without hesitation, she said, “Getting a new Unicom radio stand.”

That was the moment the Operation Reklaw Continues initiative was born. Founder Ed Ponikvar summed it up with the perfect thought: “Need a Unicom radio stand? Hold my beer. We got this!” KPN immediately took action, applying the same mission-oriented leadership we use to help veterans regain purpose and strength. By focusing on practical solutions and ensuring mission success, we are facilitating the construction of the new Radio Stand—the critical infrastructure that will provide certainty and safety for the Fly-In this year and for years to come.

Our events are light-hearted and promote community to reduce self-harming behavior. When needed, we are backed by a potent yet loving cadre of advisors/mentors and counselors. Membership fees and operational costs are covered by a benefactor. All who arrive at the free portion of our website are considered "friends" of KPN. From the instant you engage, your trajectory will be monitored. You will either find it is not your cup of tea or be drawn to join in the struggle and the victories. We aim for maximum durability in all who seek to walk in the light. Those who are exhibiting tendencies of stewardship, volunteering, lifting spirits, and broadening smiles are considered "factors." Once you become a factor you can activate an experience with just a call or text. A range of individuals and resources will arrive at your side to assist you. If you remain consistent in spirit, you grow to be a "facilitator" and perhaps a "fellow." Our volunteers are referred by many names. Trail Tribe, Phantoms of the Forest, Trail Angels. In truth, we are not about the trail or transport devices. We are in the transportation business but not external transportation, but internal toward better, more purpose-driven lives. We are here for those that want to change their trajectory from the inside out.
